about

With their new music cycle T'ien Lai venture into uncharted territory with their music becoming denser, darker, more layered and complex. This album begins somewhat innocently with "Dust Bath" paying tribute to Theo Parrish and outsider house esthetic driven by a sample from Bollywood movie. "Swords Out of Leaves" is a different beast where 80s synth nostalgia inspired by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono meets digital dub and polyrhythmic bells to create dark, dreamy and retrofuturistic urban landscape. "Decorative Predator" brings complex, asymmetric post-dubstep rhythms, blending them with deconstructed club schizoidality and lightness of house music. The last track "Animal City" is a vaporwave-induced rave'y digital dub song. Anxiety, artificial happiness, agitation and feeling of excess and abnormality that build up over the course of this album culminate in the last two minutes of this track where Skrillex, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Technotronic finally shake hands.

"In Natures Vol. 1, T'ien Lai conjures a myriad of influences to create a wonderfully progressive and challenging piece of electronic music. One of the band’s greatest strengths is their experimentation with genres, otherwise serving a utilitarian means, outside their original context to create a fresh tonic. By mixing various techniques from a swath of backgrounds, T’ien Lai made a soundscape that feels habitable and uncannily human."
- Andy Dion, Boston Hassle

"Nowego cyklu T'ien Lai nie można nazwać hołdem, próżno tutaj szukać pokłonów i nostalgii, to widmontologiczne podejście wykluczające istnienie osi czasu, sytuujące sto lat kultury popularnej w jednym zbiorze." - Jarosław Kowal, Soundrive.pl

T'ien Lai set off as a analog electronic duo (Jakub Ziołek & Łukasz Jędrzejczak) performing their noisey and drony sound collages primarily on old Polish Śnieżka radio sets. This phase was captured on 2013 album Da'at (Monotype Records). Then the duo started incorporating nonoccidental rhythms into their music which became more sample- and groove-based. This period culminated in 2015 with the release of Rhthm (Monotype Records). Since then the group mutated into a quartet (with Rafał Kołacki of Innercity Ensemble and Mikołaj Zieliński of Alameda Org) and started performing tribalistic industrial techno live shows that blended aggressive electronics and live percussion. T'ien Lai was invited to a Shape Platform in 2016 and performed at various festivals including: CTM (Berlin), Unsound (Cracow), Mutek (Montreal), Luminato (Toronto), Rocolectiv (Bucharest), Phono (Odense) and others. At the moment T'ien Lai consists of three members (Jędrzejczak, Ziołek, Zieliński) and looks for inspiration in modern nonoccidental electronic music scenes co-creating new music style known as "konk".
